Inflammation: Metalloenzyme Inhibitors

Summary

Background

Project Status

Summary

This programme is focused upon identifying selective inhibitors of metalloproteases believed to be involved in inflammatory and immune disorders including multiple sclerosis. Metalloproteases are classified as having a metal iron group within the enzyme and are key targets within a number of critical pathways.

Background

The company has a research and development collaboration with Serono to identify new treatments for inflammatory diseases.

Project Status

In January 2005, Vernalis’ partner, Serono, started a Phase I clinical trial of a selective inhibitor of MMP-12 (matrix metalloprotease inhibitor 12).  The Phase I trial, which has now completed, was performed in healthy volunteers, with a primary objective of elucidating the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetic properties of the compound. Serono is conducting and funding all development activities associated with any programme that enters the clinic, with Vernalis receiving milestone payments and royalties upon successful commercialisation of any product.
